The Bougainvillea forms part of the Nyctaginaceae family, to which the Beauty-of-the-Night varieties also belong. The Bougainvillea is native to the South American highlands, where it was discovered by French Admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) who brought it over to Europe in the second half of the 18th century. Today we have hundreds of types and varieties to choose from. And even more varieties are created through hybridisation. The Bougainvillea owes its attractive colours not to its flowers (because these are small and inconspicuous) but instead to the beautifully coloured bracts.
We have compiled a few handy tips on caring for your Bougainvillea.
